Trials And Tribulations Of Hosting Problems

Year 2006 has not been a good year on web hosting for me.

I have just lost some postings right here on this blog due to hosting problems and cause my data to be lost. This is not the first time. Last month I had another problem with another hosting company which caused my websites hosted there to be down for like 1 week. And their response was terrible. Of course, I ended my contract with them.

Find a good hosting company is a very tricky. This hosting company which I terminated the contract with had very good reviews from quite a number of marketers. But woe to those who were on this particular server. Last month was not the only episode. Previously there was another problem and we had websites down for a few days.

Being involved in server administration myself before, I know managing a server is no easy feat especially when things start to go wrong ( due to DOS attacks etc ). No hosting company is safe from that.

However I would appreciate a hosting company who is responsible and respond and update the customers frequently on the status. And not leaving them without an inkling of what’s happening.

Thus my reason for terminating is purely a case of bad support and helpdesk. ( to think they even had a forum for their users! you can see all the affected people ranting and nothing, zilch responses from the adminstrator… )

For this hosting that this blog is on, I had no problem with them for the whole year. Last month, they had an attack from hackers on the server. Which they promptly alerted all customers. For my problem, they had responded within half a day and got my sites up and running. I even requested for them to try to retieve my lost data and they had tried and responded all well within a day. This is the type of support one needs for hosting.

So I am still going to give them another chance. However this time, I must set up all my backups properly that include my wordpress databases!

So please do not leave your backup to others.

Plan : Everytime I do new postings, I will do a wordpress backup ( since now WP2.0 all comes default with the plugin )
